Orston stroll
We suggest parking at or near Church St, Orston, (NG13 9NS). There is plenty of on road parking in the village. Setting off from the church at 10.30am we head south west from the pub and cross into Chapel Street. Continuing south west, we cross the railway and aim for Whatton-in-the-Vale. We hope to reach the pub (Cranmer Arms, Aslockton) in time for lunch, hence the later 9.30 am start. The pub doesn't serve meals so won't mind if we sit there, as long as we buy a drink. After lunch we head east out of the village and along the River Smite back to Orston.

Post recce notes: On 27th July is the Outlaw Triathlon. DON'T go to Orston via Car Colston, as our SatNav suggested. Most of the routes are restricted that day. Use the A52 as far as Elton and then turn left on Station Road. The walk is flat - the highest point is the humpback bridge! - with no stiles. Park sensitively anywhere in the village. We'll meet at the church on Church Street/The Green. Please let us know if you're going straight there.

Linacre Reservoirs
An undulating walk mostly on quiet lanes and good tracks. Starting from Nether Chanderhill we pass through Ashgate on our way to Linacre Reservoirs. Our return route takes us through the hamlet of Wigley. On quiet lanes, tracks, field and woodland paths.
Moderate circular walk.

Travelling and Parking Instructions:

A619 to Chesterfield.  Continue on A619 through Chesterfield (towards Chatsworth).

Shortly after leaving Chesterfield the road starts to climb steadily and becomes two lanes on your side.  When a staggered crossroads sign and petrol station (on your right) come into view move into the right hand lane.  Ignore the right hand turning immediately before the garage, but a few yards after the garage turn right into a large lay-by.  (There is a bollard on either side of the entrance). This is where we are parking. We will start walking at 10.00am or before if we are all accounted for.  Therefore please let us know if you are going directly to the start.

Saturday 20th September 2025 09:00am – 5.6 miles – Strenuous
Upper Burbage
Upper Burbage Bridge - Higger Tor - Over Owler Tor - Padley Gorge - Upper Burbage Bridge.

Please note: this walk has been reclassified as Strenuous in view of the amount of climbing/scrambling involved and the large proportion of difficult, rocky under foot conditions.

We shall depart from Upper Burbage Bridge Car Park, Ringinglow Road, (O.S. 260830) at 10.15am. If you are going straight there, please let us know.
The first half of the walk comprises typical Derbyshire edge walking conditions, i.e. boulders and bizarre shaped rocks and stony paths. There are several short, steep rocky climbs up to Higger Tor and Over Owler Tor with some scrambling and hands and knees for those with shorter legs! Inevitably there are short, steep rocky descents down the other side(s).

There are spectacular views all day, if the weather is kind. As the walk is very exposed to the elements, we might decide to seek an alternative walk if the weather is awful.

The second half takes us into the Longshaw Estate along the river at the top end of Padley Gorge. The final 1.5 miles is along a firm, easy, steadily rising gravel track ("Sheffield Country Walk").
Strenuous walk with 302m (940 ft) total climb.

Lots of good views – there are some stiles, but no difficult ones.

Shipley Country Park  - 6.2 miles - Easy

A lovely autumn walk from Mapperley village through Shipley Country Park. Relatively flat with a couple of gradual ascents. Good stoned or tarmaced paths, tracks and quiet lanes. Woodland, waterside and open countryside. Lunch stop at the Visitor Centre with toilets and café.  Distance can be reduced by 0.5 mile at the end if necessary.

We will be parking on Mapperley Lane, Mapperley (DE7 6BW).  Suggested route from Ilkeston - take the A609 towards West Hallam.  After about 1.6 miles (from Ilkeston) you will pass the Newdigate pub (grey building) on your right. In a further half a mile turn right at a crossroads signed for Mapperley village. Follow the road downhill and under a bridge. The road then climbs uphill. Please park on the roadside as you approach the village as there is very limited parking in the village.

We will start walking at 10.15am. Kindly let us know if you are coming even if you plan to go to Milton Court first.

The walk will set off from the Southwell Trail in Farnsfield at 9.45am and should accommodate all abilities as it circles Farnsfield village, following the newish Village Heritage Trail and offers  return options to the start point throughout.

Option 1: Southwell trail-Hexgreave Hall and Deer Park-Southwell Trail 3.7 Miles Flat

Option 2: Southwell trail-Hexgreave Hall and Deer Park-HadleighPark-QuakerLane (opportunity to return to the start)-Halifax Bomber Memorial-return to the village green (opportunity to visit The Lion for a celebratory drink)-continue to the start. 6 miles Flat.

Option 3: Continue from the village green across fields to the White Post Inn, north along the A614 to return to the start point along the Southwell trail (Rainworth-Farnsfield section) 8.5 miles Flat.

Poulter Country Park

Leaving the Poulter Country Park main car park off Whaley Road, Langwith, (NG20 9HS - Grid ref. 725525) at 9.30am, we skirt the park in woodland. Using tracks and field paths, we follow the railway to Norwood Farm, turn south past Graves Wood and reach Cuckney Hay Wood. Turning south west, we pass Top Farm and reach the disused railway before turning north to return to the start.

Mainly flat and firm under foot with 3 stiles and very little climbing.

Awsworth, Cossall, Strelley and Swingate - 6.5 miles

A pleasant and relatively easy walk in the Erewash Valley area.  Starting from Awsworth (see below) we walk alongside the Nottingham Canal for just over a mile before climbing steadily up to Cossall for our coffee stop.  From here we make our way on quiet lanes and good tracks to Strelley Hall.  This will be our lunch stop with the option to buy refreshments at the café, and, of course, the all important toilets!  Our route then continues past Strelley 'zoo' and on to Swingate (Kimberley).  Finally we turn left and drop back down to Awsworth via Babbington.  Although the walk is on good paths and tracks, please come prepared for some mud in places!

Windgather Rocks

A small but dramatic gritstone crag standing above the Goyt Valley, with fine views over Cheshire and the mountains of the Dark Peak. It’s the centrepiece of this walk that heads up from Toddbrook Reservoir just outside the small town of Whaley Bridge. The return route crosses the edge of Goyt Forest and Taxal Moor.

Bestwood Park (Cancelled)

After weeks of incessant rain part of the route between Stokes Ford and Hazelford Hall (Mill Wood) has become a quagmire/mudbath. With more rain forecast in the week leading up to 1st March I propose to change the walk as follows:

Start: Bestwood Park Winding House Car Park, Park Road, Bestwood NG6 8TQ (the location of our summer BBQ) at 9.45am (9.30 Ravenshead). The walk is an easy 5/6 mile figure of eight walk, taking in the Lake area to the West and Bigwood to the East. As the walk passes the centre point of the eight near the Winding House it is possible to shorten the walk to 3 miles for those seeking an easier walk.

The walk is mostly on well-constructed paths with one stile and three gentle ascents. Please let Dick know if you are joining at the Winding House.

Belph Brook (Welbeck)

Look for the Garden Centre/Harley Gallery entrance at Welbeck S80 3LW (approx. 35-40 mins). DON'T take the first entrance signposted "Welbeck: The School of  Artisan Food". Depart from horse statue outside the gallery at 10.00am. Suggest A614/A616 route via Ollerton roundabout to Welbeck, since there have been road works traffic lights causing holdups on the A60.

A circular walk through fields to the nearby hamlet of Belph, with a picturesque stream and quintessential village (!) which continues on to South Tunnel Lodge.

Accessibility: The walk includes a range of surfaces, with some slight inclines, fields, country road crossings and uneven stretches. At the time of the recce (Sunday 22/03) there were one or two muddy spots. As always, please let us know if you're travelling straight to Welbeck.

Sandiacre/Stanton by Dale - A Walk in The Clouds
Meet 9.00 am Ravenshead (Precinct CP) or 10.00 am at Sandiacre Library Car Park (NG10 5FJ).
A moderate circular walk. Undulating countryside with a couple of steeper climbs. The clouds refer to an area of open wild
space. There is evidence of a ridge and furrow ploughing system. We cross a couple of golf courses (one not in use)
through the pleasant village of Stanton by Dale where there is a 13 th century church and a village cross (1632).On a clear
day you can see Charnwood, Nottingham. There are a couple of stiles.

The walk will commence from the Ravenshead shopping precinct at 9.30. We will walk through the village to the garage at the Kighill Lane junction. Thence over the fields to the Equestrian Centre (former telephone exchange) and over fields to Field Lane, Blidworth. Through the village to the church and Rigg Lane and thence via the "steeple chase" path to the Little John pub and after some liquid refreshment back to the village centre. There are 5 stiles and some undulations!

Harlow Wood
As the walk starts from the Little John pub in Ravenshead (NG15 9GS), I suggest we aim to meet there at 09.30, rather than 9. Publican happy for us to use the pub car park. Pleasant walk through undulating countryside north of Ravenshead. Sandy tracks, bridleways and byways.  Only one (easy) stile. 6.7 mile walk can easily be reduced to 6, or even less. The walk will follow the footpath beside the Little John to Rickett Lane crossing straight over to enter Harlow Wood. Following the woodland paths up to the A617 before returning past Lindhurst Farm. Walking straight over Cross Lane we follow paths and fields to the edge of Blidworth. From here we return to the pub over undulating fields. This is a moderate walk with undulating terrain which can be muddy in places, there is only one stile.

Due to Allan's indisposition Dick will lead the May 26th Tuesday walk as follows:

The walk will commence at Colliers' Wood Country Park Car Park at 10.00 am (9.30 am Ravenshead). Colliers' Wood is just off the B600 just North of Moor Green (NG16 3QU).

The walk will pass through this well landscaped park and join the "funeral" path which runs over fields from Brinsley to Moor Green. From the Moor Green/Newthorpe road we shall continue over fields to Greasley Church and thence by road back via Moor Green to Colliers Wood, passing the Reuban Shaw Nursery (possibility for tea or coffee). This easy walk is 3.5 miles with no stiles.

Repeat of last year’s successful walk with a possibility of Sunday lunch at ‘The Boat’ Hayton. Starting at the Hop Pole Inn(DN22 6UG) at 09:45am on the A620 east of Retford towards Gainsborough (lay-by parking just past the Inn). The walk ismostly flat on roads, fields, track and canal towpaths with two styles and one gentle assent. Passing through Welham,above Clarborough and down to Hayton, returning by canal towpath. As easy circular walk which can be shortened.

Linacre Reservoirs
An undulating walk mostly on quiet lanes and good tracks. Starting from Nether Chanderhill we pass through Ashgate on
our way to Linacre Reservoirs. Our return route is via fields, tracks, quiet lanes and woodland paths.

Travelling and Parking Instructions
A619 to Chesterfield.  Continue on A619 through Chesterfield (towards Chatsworth).
Shortly after leaving Chesterfield the road starts to climb steadily and becomes two lanes on
your side.  When a staggered crossroads sign and petrol station (on your right) come into
view move into the right hand lane.  Ignore the right hand turning immediately before the
garage, but a few yards after the garage turn right into a large lay-by.  (There is a bollard
on either side of the entrance. This is where we are parking.
We will start walking at 10.00am or before if we are all accounted for.  As we will not be
coming to Milton Court please let us know (by the previous evening) if you are coming
on the walk.

Awsworth

An easy 4 mile walk along the Nottingham Canal before dropping down to join the Erewash
Canal. Our return route takes us over the Bennerley Viaduct - probably the highlight of the
walk! 
We will be parking at the far end of Newton's Lane, Awsworth (NG16 2SB).  Please drive to
the far end of the road where you can turn round and park just below the entrance to the
new housing estate.  Do let us know if you need more information about finding Newton's
Lane.
As we will not be coming to Milton Court, please let us know (by the previous evening)
if you are coming on the walk.

From Bakewell gentle footpaths lead over rolling countryside followed by a stroll along the river Derwent to ChatsworthHouse. We return passing through the picturesque village of Edensor and back over rolling hills to Bakewell.
